1st United Methodist Church of Wichita historical homes

The first meeting of what was destined to become The First Methodist Church was held in May, 1870 in a room over a livery stable, located at the corner of what are now Third and Main streets. It was attended by a small group of men and women.

During the winter of 1870-71, this small fellowship was in invited by the congregation of the new Presbyterian Church to use its facilities for afternoon meetings.

1872 - 1878
On Sunday, December 1, 1872, the dedication of the first church home was held for the young First Methodist congregation. The records indicated that the chuch was a unpretentious but serviceable building.

1878 - 1884
In 1878 the first building had become to small so it was moved to the rear of the lots on which it stood and a new addition, facing Broadway, was built onto it. The congregation was so enthused about its larger home that it was completely paid for within two years after being built.

In 1884 the building was burned to the ground, a complete and total loss. Suspicion was the that the fire was the result of a bitter fight waged by the previous pastor and members of the congregation against the liquor and vice interests in the growing city.

1885 - 1923
On Sunday, May 10, 1885, a new church home was dedicated free of all indebtedness. At the time, it was the most beautiful church in the city.

1923 - 1961
In 1915, land was purchased north of the existing church and preliminary work was begun on building a new church home. The building was completed and dedicated on Sunday, April 22, 1923. This building was the church home of The First Methodist Church until the current building was built.
